Stephenville, Texas March 12, 2020—The City of Stephenville has been monitoring developments with COVID-19 since it became apparent that it could be a worldwide issue. The City has been a participant in conference calls with the Texas Department of State Health Services daily for the past few weeks. The City also participates in conference calls with the Texas Department of Emergency Management when those calls are made. The city has consulted its Public Health Official Kelly Doggett as well.
In an overabundance of caution and based on the information received from the State of Texas and from Dr. Doggett the city is taking the following action: Effective Friday March 13, 2020 there will be no organized group activity in the city’s parks and recreation center for the next 14 days. As the CDC has designated people over 60 years of age as a vulnerable population, the Senior Center will also be closed for 14 days.
These actions will be reevaluated daily based on information from the State of Texas and the CDC. At this time, there is a distinct possibility that these activities and facility may be impacted for a longer period of time. As of now, they will reopen on March 27.
Mayor Doug Svien stated, “We know this will be an inconvenience for some our residents, but we would rather be wrong in closing, than have one of our valuable residence suffer from exposure at one of our facilities.”
The greatest responsibility for a municipal government is the health and safety of its residents. We at the City of Stephenville take this responsibility very seriously.
